What we offer

Thomas has a real knack for helping people recognize the underlying patterns and habits that are holding us back, and then gently pushing us to confront them. Through our conversations, I went from feeling stuck and powerless to realizing I actually had the agency to make some truly life-changing decisions.

North Road uses a somatic approach to help clients work through the internal aspects of their struggle, which often has positive knock-on effects: clients report that only once they’re able to access internal feelings of peace and stability can they resolve external conflicts to their satisfaction.  Coaching may employ other techniques as necessary, like the more introspective approaches of the late Dr. John Sarno.

North Road founder Thomas Stevenson is also a certified mediator, and uses those skills to metaphorically “walk with” clients as they find their way toward the resolution of external difficulties as well.

We offer clients in-person visits in the greater Washington, DC area and in Bogotá, Colombia, as well as offering virtual visits to clients based elsewhere. Coaching and training is available to individuals and organizations in both English and Spanish.

Individual Coaching

Though our approach varies from one client to the next, our focus is on helping people experiencing unexplained physical symptoms (e.g., syndromes such as headaches, back pain, digestive problems, etc.). These problems can have many, many origins—an upsetting or destabilizing event, such as losing a job, for example—and, surprisingly often, these have nothing to do with physical illness or injury. We also work with people who feel “out of control”: those who suffer from social media/screen and similar addictions, for example, which profoundly disturbs the rhythms of their nervous systems.

Depending upon where people are in their process, recovery can entail several steps: some clients first need to become aware of symptoms and changes in symptomology. Other clients are more interested in making sense of their symptoms and/or mediating their relationship to symptoms, which makes them more bearable or, in many cases, relieves uncomfortable symptoms entirely. The process generally entails building clients' resilience and ability to manage future symptoms.

Training to Organizations

North Road’s founder has led training in conflict resolution and a somatic approach to handling stress in contexts as diverse as El Salvador and Pakistan. These trainings typically range in length from two to five days, though we tailor each one to the client’s specific needs. Past trainees include private sector leaders, NGOs, and groups of psychologists and social workers who want to use a somatic approach in their work.
